What is Sclerotherapy?
If you’ve been dealing with varicose veins or spider veins and are looking for a solution, you should consider sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is minimally invasive and has been around for decades. Dr. Kismet has been trained in sclerotherapy for well over a decade and treated countless patients.
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that involves injecting a special solution directly into problem veins. The solution irritates the walls of the vein, causing them to collapse and close off. Over time, the body naturally absorbs the collapsed vein, and it disappears, leaving behind smoother, healthier-looking skin. This treatment is most often used for “spider veins” that are cosmetic and the treatment is not covered by insurance.
How Sclerotherapy Works
Sclerotherapy is relatively simple and doesn’t require surgery or lengthy recovery time. On the day of the injections, you’ll be positioned comfortably, and the area where the veins are located will be cleaned. Dr. Kismet carefully injects a medication called Polidocanol 1% (Asclera®) directly into the veins using a fine needle. Polidocanol is better tolerated than older sclerosing agents which burn. You might feel a slight pinching or burning sensation, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated and doesn’t require anesthesia or numbing.
Post-Treatment: After the injections, you will need to wear compression stockings for a period of time to help the veins heal and prevent new ones from forming. Because of this, colder months are preferred for better comfort. Some patients experience mild bruising or redness around the injected veins, but this typically resolves within a few days.
Follow-Up: You may need to return for additional sessions depending on the size and number of veins being treated. Results often become visible within a few weeks to a few months, with many patients needing 1-3 sessions for optimal results.
Benefits of Sclerotherapy
- Improved Appearance: One of the most noticeable benefits of sclerotherapy is cosmetic. The treatment can significantly reduce the appearance of varicose and spider veins, leaving you with smoother skin and more confidence.
- Relief from Symptoms: In addition to improving appearance, sclerotherapy can help alleviate discomfort associated with varicose veins, such as pain, aching, swelling, cramping, and fatigue in the legs.
- Quick Recovery: Because sclerotherapy is minimally invasive, recovery time is relatively quick. Most patients can resume their normal activities right away, although you should avoid heavy exercise or prolonged standing for a short time.
- No Need for Surgery: Unlike other more invasive treatments like vein stripping or laser therapy, sclerotherapy is non-surgical, which means there’s no need for general anesthesia or large incisions.
- Long-Lasting Results: Once the veins are treated, they typically don’t come back. However, new veins can form over time, so maintenance treatments may be necessary for some individuals.
What to Expect After Sclerotherapy
While sclerotherapy is a safe and effective treatment, there are a few things you should expect post-treatment:
- Mild Side Effects: It’s common to experience some minor side effects such as bruising, swelling, or redness around the treated veins. These side effects usually resolve on their own within a few days to weeks.
- Compression Stockings: Your doctor may recommend wearing compression stockings for several days after the procedure. These stockings help promote healing and reduce swelling.
- Activity Restrictions: You’ll likely be encouraged to walk and stay active, but avoid intense exercise or standing for long periods of time immediately after the procedure.
- Follow-Up Appointments: Some veins may require additional treatments, so it’s important to follow up with your doctor as recommended.
How Much Does Sclerotherapy Cost?
Dr. Kismet charges by the vials needed to treat the areas of concern. This starts at $200 per vial. During your consultation, Dr. Kismet can estimate how much might be needed for your treatment.
Is Sclerotherapy Right for You?
Sclerotherapy is generally a safe and effective procedure for most people, but it’s not suitable for everyone. Factors such as your health history, the severity of your veins, and other medical conditions may influence whether sclerotherapy is the right choice for you. Book a consultation to see if sclerotherapy can help you.
