Aesthetic medicine has come a long way! When many think of aesthetics, they think of injecting collagen or other substances to make someone look, well, NOT themselves. Since the 1920’s, physicians and scientist have sought to find days to help individuals with concerns about their appearance which significantly impact their self-esteem. Many feel that is vain, but we ALL do things to make ourselves look and therefore feel better, i.e. cutting and styling our hair, wearing makeup, buying new clothes, buying a nice car…this is not a new phenomenon.
One of the pioneers of aesthetic medicine was a female plastic surgeon in 1926, Dr. Noel, who helped burn victims, yes because they sought medicine to help their appearance and thus self-esteem. So fast forward to the 2000’s. We all joke that the “Fountain of Youth” is a myth, but that reality is not too far now from reality.
Regenerative medicine is a new and innovative area of medicine that uses the body’s natural healing processes to restore form and function. Regenerative medicine is now what I consider the “state of the art” part of aesthetic medicine.
When we talk about aging from an aesthetic perspective, one of the primary processes is the loss of collagen and elastin. Collagen (Type 1 and 3) are the “rebar” of our skin that act as scaffolding to provide form. Elastin is the “elastic” in our skin and allows skin to bounce back, i.e. function.
Unfortunately, we start losing both at the tender age of 20! That’s right, aging starts at age 20. It might not show for another 5-10 years, but it all starts a lot earlier than many of us would like to admit. Of course, multiple factors accelerate this process including genetics, hormone changes (i.e. menopause), environmental factors (i.e. gravity) and toxins (i.e. sun and cigarette smoking).
However, brilliant scientists have discovered that the body also has amazing healing properties. If the body has a reason to heal…guess what, it will.
Remember Dr. Noel the female 1920s burn surgeon? She found that patients after the injury of burns had profound healing, thus, the advent of chemical peels in aesthetics. Micro needling for skin rejuvenation and healing came out of the practice of tattooing over a scar. When a scar was tattooed over for camouflage, observers found that the scar healed! This led to research into the why. When there is microscopic injury to skin, the body stimulates the activation of cells called fibroblasts that come in and HEAL! They produce new collagen, elastin, proteoglycans and stimulate a process called “angiogenesis” to create new blood vessels. The human body is truly amazing!
Examples of regenerative aesthetic treatments include RF microneedling and PDO. Plasma Therapy is also regenerative. However, I’d like to highlight another treatment that is not only regenerative but causes bio-stimulation. Radiesse® is an injectable that stimulates fibroblasts to produce both Type 1 and 3 collagen and elastin. It is called a “CaHA” injectable which stands for “calcium hydroxylapatite” and is the only one of its kind. It is injected as a bio stimulator into areas such as the cheeks or chin or diluted and “spread” under the skin for anti-aging. We use it in the face, neck, arms, hands, abdomen, thighs, even the booty!
Eight months after a treatment of Radiesse®, Collagen type 1 increases by 15% AND Collagen Type 3 by 20%. That’s a >33% increase in collagen after one treatment. Personally, I have had two treatments of Radiesse® and my before and after is proof! The picture to the right is after one treatment! Radiesse® really has no downtime. After both of my treatments, I worked the next day. You can expect some mild discomfort at the injection sites and perhaps some bruising or swelling. Come see if you want to discuss if this is a good option for you!
