PDO Threading is a minimally invasive procedure done in the office with localized numbing. Dr. Kismet passes “threads” that are made of an absorbable material called “polydioxanone” (i.e. PDO). PDO is a dissolvable material made from long chains of polysaccharides (i.e. sugars) that your body gradually breaks down. Lifting threads have notches that grasp onto surrounding tissue thus allowing Dr. Kismet to pull or lift loose, sagging skin. Some threads that are thinner and “smooth” or “twisted” are used to help restore volume in sunken areas or to help heal wrinkles and scars. All threads dissolve over time and as they do, create a regenerative, healing response creating beautiful new collagen and elastin (the proteins in our skin crucial to providing structure and elasticity). Collagen and elastin are what we lose as we age thus causing our skin to fall, become loose and saggy. PDO threads literally turn back the hands of time using your body’s own healing processes. They not only make you look younger, they are actually MAKING you younger. Threads are typically placed in pairs or sets of four depending on the desired effect. They start at $160 for a group of four for shorter smooth threads and a set of lifting threads at $500. Smooth and twist threads are perfect to combine during your botox treatments.
Q: How long does it take? A: A lifting procedure is usually performed in an hour-long appointment with time for preparation, the procedure and education.
Q: Is it very painful? A: Surprisingly there is minimal discomfort. Dr. Kismet numbs the spot the threads go in, but as they slide into place you typically feel pressure or some pinching. We go slow and give you a little bit of extra numbing if needed.
Q: What is the downtime? A: Your downtime is very minimal. You may want to take it easy the day of your procedure and have a quiet night that day, but you can go to work and resume most activities the next day! You may experience some mild to moderate swelling around or along the site where the threads are placed. Because we have so many blood vessels in our face, bruising is always possible. To minimize this, we recommend refraining from alcohol and blood thinning medicine like ibuprofen or supplements for a week prior.
Q: How long will the threads last? A: Everyone is different, but threads gradually dissolve over six to nine months. During this time, your body is building beautiful new collagen and elastin. The results are cumulative and take time to develop. I recommend a re-evaluation after one year to see if you have reached the results you want.
Q: Is it the same thing as a facelift? A: NO. A surgical facelift done by a plastic surgeon typically will give you a much more dramatic result, but the downtime and cost is significantly more ($2,500 vs $15,000). However, a surgical facelift may be what you need. Come see me to discuss what lifting threads can do, and I can refer you to a reputable plastic surgeon in our area if this is the therapy that would be best for you.
Q: What brands of PDO threads do you use? A: I use both Miracu® and Novathreads®. They are both of exceptional quality and FDA cleared.
Q: What else can I do that is similar? A: Radiesse® is an amazing regenerative filler that when diluted and placed under the skin also builds collagen and elastin. The price starts at $950 for one treatment area.
