Summer is approaching fast, and the sun is out. This summer, your skin’s best friend is SPF! During summer, the weather helps your skin hold moisture/hydration better than the colder months. You will be on the more oily than dry side (depending on your skin type of course). Preparing your skin for the summer involves a combination of skincare routines and lifestyle habits that help protect, nourish, and maintain healthy skin as the weather warms up. Here are some steps to get your skin summer-ready:

Exfoliate Regularly:

Gently exfoliate your skin to remove dead skin cells, allowing for a smoother, brighter complexion. Use a chemical exfoliant (like AHAs or BHAs) to slough off dead skin.

Exfoliate 1-3 times a week, depending on your skin type. We love Jan Marini’s Skin Research’s Bioclear face lotion which contains 3 types of hydroxyl acids

Hydrate Your Skin:

Summer heat can still dehydrate your skin, so use a lightweight moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated without clogging pores. Look for products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which draw moisture into the skin.

Drink plenty of water to hydrate from the inside out.

Wear Sunscreen Daily:

Sunscreen is crucial to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, which can cause premature aging, sunburn, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Opt for broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. We love our Jan Marini Skin Research and Obagi sunscreens!

Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating.

Switch to Lighter Skincare Products:

As the weather gets warmer, consider switching to lighter skincare products. Swap out heavy creams for gel-based moisturizers or serums to keep your skin feeling fresh and breathable.

Protect Your Lips:

Your lips can also get sunburned, so use a lip balm with SPF to protect them from UV damage and dryness.

Keep Skin Clean:

Summer heat can lead to increased sweat and oil production. Cleanse your skin daily with a gentle cleanser to avoid clogged pores and breakouts. Avoid harsh cleansers that strip your skin of its natural oils; instead, look for products that balance oil production without over-drying.

Stay Cool and Avoid Excessive Heat Exposure:

Avoid long periods of sun exposure, especially during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). If you’re outside, seek shade, wear protective clothing, and use a wide-brimmed hat.

Take cool showers to help reduce inflammation and skin irritation from sun exposure.

Use After-Sun Care:

After being in the sun, apply a soothing aloe vera gel or after-sun lotion to calm your skin and replenish moisture.

By following these steps, you’ll help ensure that your skin stays healthy, hydrated, and protected throughout the summer months!
