RF (RADIOFREQUENCY) MICRONEEDLING
RF Microneedling is an amazing treatment for just about every concern we have in aesthetics. The beauty of this device, however, is that it can be used on ALL skin (or Fitzpatrick) types. Many types of lasers (i.e. IPL) should NOT be used on individuals with darker skin types or higher Fitzpatrick skin types as they can cause unwanted pigmentation.
RF (radiofrequency) is the type of energy used and delivered to the skin during the treatment. I use a fantastic device made by Beneve called the Sylfrim® X. It is the first and only DUAL wave RF microneedling machine available and is FDA Cleared. It allows me to tailor treatments for each patient by customizing three different components: 1) Pulse or Continuous Wave energy (PW or CW) 2) Depth (0.3 to 4mm) and 3) Strength of energy. The inventor, Dr. Na, has specific studied protocols that help guide these determinations. Sylfirm® X uses a handpiece with 25 ultra-fine, gold plated, non-insulated needles. The machine robotically engages all 25 needles simultaneously to the predetermined depth, delivering the prescribed energy in a pulse or continuous manner. The treatment triggers a healing response that stimulates new collagen production and speeds up skin cell turnover.
Sylfirm® X is used for skin rejuvenation (as it builds collagen) to firm and tighten skin and restore texture. It also is used to break up pigmentation, shrink and treat blood vessels that cause abnormal redness and spider veins. Since it builds collagen, it can treat sagging skin, scars and stretchmarks as well! Here is the list of what it can help with: rosacea, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), scars (even acne scars), stretch marks, skin laxity, wrinkles, uneven skin texture, large pores, hair loss, active acne, spot fat reduction.
As part of my treatments, I include the application of exosomes to the treated area rather than PRP or PRF. What are exosomes? Exosomes are natural occurring extracellular vesicles that are currently the most advanced regenerative treatment in aesthetic medicine we have. They are nano-sized vesicles that contain cargo crucial for intercellular communication with growth factors to stimulate fibroblasts thus starting the cascade of events to start building collagen. I use USA produced RESILIÉLLE exosomes that contain 5 billion exosomes per vial. Best yet, no blood draws (like PRP or PRF) are needed. Less pokes and more effective, a win-win.
Q: Is RF microneeding painful?
A: Surprisingly there is minimal discomfort. We apply topical prescription strength numbing cream and allow it to sit for 20-30 minutes. We encourage you to unplug and relax in our beautiful clinic while you numb. For scalps, I do a crown block to help numb the area since we can’t apply cream due to hair. During the procedure, which takes about 30 minutes, there is some very mild discomfort in more sensitive areas, but the Sylfirm® X has been noted to be MUCH more comfortable than other machines on the market (i.e. the Morpheus8). This has to do with the fact that the needles are NOT insulated and thus create less associated injury to tissue where it is not needed. Personally, I have done RF microneedling to my own hairline, abdomen and arms with zero numbing.
Q: How long does it take?
A: We book your appointment for 75 minutes. This gives us sufficient time to take pre-treatment photos, allow you to numb, do the procedure and answer questions.
Q: What is the downtime?
A: This is the beauty of this treatment. There is literally NO downtime. By applying exosomes, you are barely red after one hour. You may have some scant redness the next day. The only “downtime” is that we ask you to NOT wash, apply makeup or creams/lotions to the treated area for 24 hours to allow the exosomes to sit and work their magic. (Mascara and some eyeliner is acceptable). Then, for seven days, use the prescribed PostTX2 Recovery System which is part of the series for optimal results. This includes a gentle cleanser, “Bioshield” which acts as a barrier with more ingredients that support collagen formation, and most importantly medical grade sunscreen to protect your healing skin. Additionally, since there is no downtime, this treatment can be done ANY time of year, not just the winter months.
Q: Can it only be used on the face?
A: Absolutely NOT! We love to use it on the entire face (even upper and lower eyelids), the neck and décolletage. But it absolutely can be used on the stomach, breasts, behind the arms, upper legs… Anywhere you have loose sagging skin or stretchmarks, we can use it! AND one of the protocols, CW1, was invented to target old and tired hair follicles and rejuvenate them. So we can use it on the scalp to help stimulate hair growth. Additionally, CW4 is used to spot reduce fat (i.e under the chin, abdomen and upper arms.)
Q: Will I see immediate results?
A: Unfortunately you may not see amazing results after one treatment. I highly recommend you buy a series of at least 3 sessions spaced 2-4 weeks apart. You may see some immediate improvement in skin texture and tone and the reduction of redness and spider veins though after one session. However, the results keep getting better after each treatment. Three months after your series is the perfect point for us to evaluate your results.
Q: Who should NOT have RF Microneedling?
A: Because we use radiofrequency as an energy source, individuals with implantable electric medical devices (pacemakers, defibrillators) should not have RF microneedling. If an individual has serious and severe keloid scarring, I recommend extreme caution. Obviously, do not get RF microneedling for active skin cancer, this is not a treatment for cancer. If you are prone to cold sores, you may want to pretreat with acyclovir or valacyclovir to avoid a break out. Unfortunately, we also do not do this treatment on pregnant women.
Q: What are the benefits of RF Microneedling over traditional microneedling?
A: While traditional microneedling is a fantastic and cheaper treatment, there are many reasons RF microneedling is considered superior. 1) Fewer sessions are required because RF microneeding penetrates deeper and uses heat energy to achieve better results in fewer sessions. 2) It is better at addressing more cosmetic concerns as described above. 3) It is safer with really NO downtime. Traditional microneeding is more abrasive to the top layers of skin, causing more superficial trauma. Individuals have severe redness for many days afterwards. 4) It is a customizable treatment. Your clinician can select the type of wave, depth and energy to deliver for each concern. 5) Most importantly, it is simply more effective at stimulating collagen production without harming the skin. Because of all of these differences, I do not offer traditionally microneedling in my practice.
Q: How much does the series cost?
A: I provide a Signature Series of Sylfirm® X Microneedling. My series include three sessions with exosome therapy spaced 2-4 weeks apart along with a Jan Marini PostTX2 Recovery System to use after each session. I charge $1200 per treatment session, or $2400 for this series (thus getting one session and the recovery system complimentary). Add on areas are $600 per session or $1200 for a series of three. My Signature Hair Rejuvenation Series includes three sessions of Sylfrim® X each with RESILIÉLLE exosome therapy and 6 months of nutritional supplementation with Nutrafol for $3000. I also accept Care Credit which is a great way to get your treatment financed. I encourage you to come in for a consultation so we can discuss how to best achieve your goal.
