What Is the DUTCH Test and How Can It Help You?

Dr. Kismet absolutely loves the DUTCH test! The DUTCH test, which stands for Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones is an easy, at-home test that gives a very detailed look at your hormones and how your body uses them. It analyzes 35 different hormones: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA-S, and cortisol along with their metabolites.

For female and male patients struggling with symptoms like hot flashes, fatigue, mood swings, low energy, libido issues, sleep problems, can be due to hormone-related issues.

What Does the DUTCH Test Check?

The DUTCH test looks at a wide range of hormones, including:

  • Sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA (important for things like menstrual health, fertility, libido, and menopause). However! It also checks the metabolites of these key hormones and how well your body is converting or methylating. By seeing where the deficiencies are, we can target therapy more effectively.
  • Stress hormones like cortisol (which affects your energy, sleep, and how you handle stress). Daily free cortisol patterns can provide insight into adrenal insufficiency or symptoms of chronic stress. Elevated levels of cortisol make weight loss very difficult.
  • Melatonin, which helps control your sleep-wake cycle.
  • It also checks for nutrients, brain chemicals, and how well your body is detoxifying by measuring oxidative stress marker – 8-Hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG),  and six organic acid tests (OATs) including markers for vitamin B12 (methylmalonate), vitamin B6 (xanthurenate), kynurenate, glutathione (pyroglutamate), dopamine (homovanillate), norepinephrine/epinephrine (vanilmandelate).

Unlike blood tests that give you just one hormone snapshot and are not often helpful or accurate, the DUTCH test shows how your hormone levels change throughout the day. Even more importantly, it reveals how your body is processing and breaking down those hormones. This can uncover hidden imbalances that other tests might miss. Our DUTCH reports are over 10 pages summarizing what was tested. Dr. Kismet will combine these results with serum or blood testing to help navigate the best treatment plan.

How Do You Take the Test?

The test is simple and done at home. You collect urine on special paper with the test kit four to five times throughout the day. After the paper dries, you send it to a lab in a pre-paid envelope. That’s it! Typically, I will receive results in 10 days.

Why Would Someone Take the DUTCH Test?

This test is often recommended if you’re dealing with ongoing fatigue or low energy, PMS or irregular periods, perimenopause or menopause symptoms, low sex drive, mood swings, anxiety, depression, trouble sleeping, weight gain or trouble losing weight, suspected adrenal fatigue or burnout.

It’s also useful if you’re using hormone therapy and want to make sure your treatment is working properly.

Things to Keep in Mind

While the DUTCH test gives a lot of helpful information, it can be expensive and isn’t usually covered by insurance. Also, the results can be complex, so it’s important to work with someone like Dr. Kismet who is very knowledgeable about hormone health to interpret the findings and create a treatment plan that fits your unique needs.

Final Thoughts

The DUTCH test is one of the most thorough ways to get to the root of hormone-related symptoms. It’s non-invasive, convenient, and gives a clearer picture of what’s going on inside your body. If you’ve been feeling “off” and other tests haven’t helped, the DUTCH test might be a valuable next step toward feeling better.

Dr. Kismet offers DUTCH testing in the office for $350. Alternatively, patients can order their own DUTCH tests through the company but will pay $499. A hormone consultation is required to get started but if you have a PPO, you may be able to request reimbursement for this office visit. Alternatively, we accept FSA/HSAs.
