Acne is a bothersome problem for teenagers, but also for many adults. I was absolutely blessed with amazing skin UNTIL I had kids. Then I struggled with adult acne from my late 20’s until my 50’s. I even did a course of Accutane (isotretinoin). I did many different high grade skin care regiments, topical prescriptions such as Retin-A etc. However, I still couldn’t find relief going into my 50sAcne Treatments | Medical Aesthetics | Clinical Dermatology | Injectables | Microneedling | Womens Health | Wellness

But there is help for acne! There are a variety of treatments, depending on how severe it is. As a physician, I can help guide your treatment and have vast experience in treating acne.

Topical Treatments include:

·       Benzoyl Peroxide: This helps kill the bacteria that cause acne and prevents pores from getting clogged.

·       Salicylic Acid: This ingredient helps clear out blocked pores by exfoliating the skin. It’s especially helpful for mild acne.

·       Retinoids (Tretinoin, Adapalene): These help speed up skin cell turnover and keep pores clear. They’re available both over-the-counter (like Differin) and by prescription.

·       Topical Antibiotics (Clindamycin, Erythromycin): These reduce inflammation and bacteria on the skin and are often used for moderate acne.

Oral Medications (Pills you take)

·       Oral Antibiotics (Doxycycline, Minocycline): These can help reduce inflammation and bacteria, and are typically used for more severe acne.

·       Birth Control Pills: If your acne is linked to hormonal changes, certain types of birth control pills can help balance your hormones and improve acne.

·       Isotretinoin (Accutane): This is a powerful medication for severe acne that doesn’t respond to other treatments. It reduces oil production and can clear up even the most stubborn cases, but it comes with potential side effects and requires careful monitoring. I am an experienced Accutane prescriber!

Other Treatments. With my med spa and our estheticians, we have treatment options to complement your regiment.

·       Facials: Facials help with acne by deep cleaning pores, exfoliating dead skin cells, hydrating the skin, reducing inflammation, and targeting breakouts with customized treatments.

·       Chemical Peels: Chemical peels exfoliate the skin and help keep pores clear. They can improve both acne and skin texture.

·       Laser Treatments and RF Microneedling: Lasers can target acne-causing bacteria and help reduce oil production, which can reduce breakouts. Some lasers also help reduce and treat scarring.

·       Light Therapy: Blue light therapy helps kill acne-causing bacteria on the skin.

At-Home Care and Lifestyle Tips

  • Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, gentle cleanser twice a day to remove excess oil and dirt, but avoid scrubbing too harshly, as this can irritate your skin. I carry both Jan Marini and Obagi medical grade skincare. Personally, when I started using Jan Marini Skin Research, my skin completely cleared and has never been better in my entire life. The proof is in the results.
  • Moisturizing: Even if you have oily skin, it’s important to use a moisturizer that won’t clog your pores. Again, I love Jan Marini and Obagi!
  • Diet: While the link between diet and acne is still being studied, some people find that cutting back on sugary foods and dairy helps their skin.
  • Sun Protection: Some acne treatments can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so be sure to use sunscreen every day to protect your skin.

5. Preventive Tips

·       Don’t Pick at Your Skin: It’s important not to squeeze or pick at acne, as this can cause more irritation, scaring, and possibly lead to new breakouts.

·       Choose Non-Comedogenic Products: Use makeup and skincare products labeled “non-comedogenic,” meaning they won’t clog your pores.

·       Stay Consistent: Acne treatments take time. It can take months to see noticeable results. I always say success is found with the “3 P’s”. You must be patient (thinks don’t improve overnight), persistent (once it starts working you need to keep going) and you must be proactive (doing the necessary things to prevent breakouts).

If your acne is severe or not responding to over-the-counter treatments, come see me. We can customize a treatment regimen for your specific needs! Dermatology consultations are $300 and follow ups are $250. You can use your FSA/HSA and, if you have a PPO, you can ask your insurance for reimbursement for your visits.
